I am enclosing a rough tracing taken from the illustration of the â Cat that Walkedâ to indicate the outlines that suggested to me grotesque monsters devouring female figures â " the waistband, skirt & foot indicating the one, and the back, part of upper of arm, waistline & part of skirt indicating the other figure. There you have the advantage of me." Averyâ s response to Kipling's letter is as follows: "Dear Sir, Please accept my thanks for your kind letter. above the cave in the illustration to â The Cat that Walkedâ. I do not recall that there was any special significance in the rocks etc. Wishing you success in your further searches, Believe me, Very Sincerely yours, Rudyard Kipling. As to the letters on the collar round King Solomonâ s neck, any friend of yours who happens to be a Freemason will tell you what they mean. Kipling's letter is responding to an enquiry regarding illustrations in the â Just So Storiesâ : â Dear Sir, I am much obliged to you for your interesting account of your discoveries in the illustrations of my â Just-So Storiesâ as I am struck with the zeal with which you followed your clues. Provenance from the Library of a private Kipling collector, and previously through a professional bookseller. Kipling's letter folded twice, with some very light creasing, else fine envelope opened, a little browned and chipped/creased to edges Avery's letter has been folded three times horizontally and once vertically, to fit inside the same envelope aside from a very small split to one of the folds, it is near-fine. London (14 x 10.5cm approx.) which is opened and annotated with 'Kipling's letter' in pencil, presumably in Avery's hand also included is a copy of Avery's original letter to Kipling, dated Nov 25th 1924. Typed letter on Kipling's Sussex address letterhead paper (20 x 26.5cm), dated 20th November 1924, signed by Kipling in black ink together with the original stamped envelope to D. Fine in fine slip-case with publicity poster leaflet and original receipt. The book spine and solander box label have been hand-lettered by Stephen Raw. ![]() The book has been hand-bound in vellum blocked in 22-carat gold, with vellum tips, by The Fine Book Bindery, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. The limited page has been printed letterpress on Hahnemuhle Ingres paper by the Logan Press, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, and foil-blocked the Havana paper case sides. ![]() The endpapers have been printed on Fabriano Tiziano paper by Full Spectrum Print Media, Basildon. The etching has been hand-printed by Bacon & Bacon, Allendale, on Zerkall natural white mould-made, cotton content paper. The plates have been reproduced by Dot Gradations, Wickford, Essex, and printed on Essential Gloss art paper by R B Print, Basildon, Essex. This edition of Just So Stories has been set in Founders Caslon types at The Folio Society and printed on Cordier Wove paper by Martins the Printers, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Edition limited to 1000 copies numbered and signed on an original print by the illustrator.Introduction by Michael Morpurgo. Housed in golden brown cloth clamshell box with gilt title label. Gilt titled quarter vellum over decorated boards with vellum tips. Number 283 of 1000 with the etching at the front signed and numbered by the artist Noroot Puttapipat.
